MOLAA Zoom Project – Alexandre Canonico (Brazil, 1974) PRE_RECORDED

  • Museum of Latin American Art 628 Alamitos Avenue Long Beach, CA, 90802 United States (map)

In each chapter, in conversation between the most remarkable artists from Latin-America and Latinxs in the US, and our MOLAA Chief Curator Gabriela Urtiaga, we place the focus on a series or specific artwork which requires a close inspection and deliberate process of contemplation, and exploration; delving into the ideas surrounding the creation of the works, their sources of research and inspiration, in an effort to immerse ourselves in the world of the artists.

  This session will be pre-recorded.

Alexandre Canonico (b.1974, Brazil; lives and works between London and São Paulo). Canonico's practice is strongly influenced by the logic and aesthetics of architectural designs and geometric abstractions. His works are born from the interest in specific materials and the exploration of their plastic possibilities results in a series of works in which the use of this material is repeated. The chosen materials are industrialized and easily available. Formally, his works tend to have a simple resolution and an economy of gestures, and the process that structures them is evident.

Canonico has a Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal Academy Schools (2017-21). Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Buraco’, at Galeria Marília Razuk, São Paulo (2019) and ‘Standstill’ at Kubik Gallery, Oporto (2019). Recent group shows include 'Off the Grid', LAMB Arts, Curated by Kiki Mazzucchelli (2021), 'Anderson Borba and Alexandre Canonico' Kupfer, (2021) New Contemporaries, South London Gallery (2021), ‘Wreck or Ruin’ V.O. Curations, (2020).
