AAPI Latinx: Hidden Internment: The Art Shibayama Story

Join us for a film screening of Hidden Internment: The Art Shibayama Story, a film about the lesser-known history of the Japanese-Latin American internment through the life story of Art Shibayama, who, at 13, was taken from Peru on March 22, 1944, and interned in Crystal City Texas for two years. Despite this internment, Art was denied redress equal to that provided to Japanese Americans.

 MOLAA invites you to learn more about the diversity of Afro-Latinx experiences directly from artists, scholars, and community organizers most actively bringing attention to contemporary Afro-Latinx communities and their histories. For over a decade, MOLAA has dedicated a day to celebrating the cultural impact of the African diaspora in the Americas through music, dance, and food at its Afro-Latinx Family Festival. Drawing inspiration from Japan’s famous Kokeshi Dolls (こけし), the stunning six-foot tall sculptures of Chicana artist Yolanda Gonzalez are a fusion of Latina culture and Japanese aesthetics. Join us on this one-hour tour as the artist herself shares her experiences in Japan and the influence of Japanese culture and artistry on her work. AAPI Latinx Heritage Series: Karen Tei Yamashita, author of Tropic of Orange

As part of Asian American and Asian Pacific Islander Latinx Heritage Month, Karen Tei Yamashita agrees to a 60- to 90-Minute Virtual Event, to include a Lecture, Q&A, and Brief Reading.

Join us as we meet with UC Presidential Chair in Feminist Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Author, Karen Tei Yamashita, Japanese American writer whose book, Tropic of Orange is a novel set in Los Angeles and Mexico with a diverse, multi-ethnic cast of characters. 

Tropic of Orange: This talk will explore the cross-culturalism between Asian and Latinx communities; the Asian and/or Latinx influence/inspiration on magical realism as a genre; and how living in CA and experiencing LA influenced her writing and the cross-culturalism in the book.  Tropic of Orange is novel set in Los Angeles and Mexico with a diverse, multi-ethnic cast of characters.
