EXPLORING QUEER ART HISTORY THROUGH A LATIN AMERICAN CANVAS

Join us for an engaging lecture by Ignacio Darnaude! Renowned Latin American artists, such as Frida Kahlo and Claudio Bravo, all the way to Chicanx artists like Carlos Almaraz and Joey Terrill created astonishing queer imagery hiding in plain sight. Their coded images allowed them to express taboos and same-sex desire in a way that wasn’t punishable. Get ready to see their work as well as art history with completely new eyes. Wine and light refreshments served.

For over 40 years, Susana G. Hinojosa has dedicated her life to studying, performing and teaching Mexican folkloric dance. She began dancing as a young child and by the time she was a teen, became a member of the longest established Folklorico dance ensemble. Registration is required; space is limited. Salvadorean author Cynthia Gonzalez will host a book signing session of Lil’ Libros newest children’s story “The Life of / La vida de Llort.” Matt Sedillo and David Romero will share their Chicano poetry with the audience and Javier Hernandez, Kayden Phoenix, Rafael Navarro and Maxi Rodriguez will be there representing the Latino Comics Expo.

2022 Asian, Pacific Islander, Latinx Festival: SUPERHERO STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW

Come celebrate cultural diversity and the cross-cultural pollination of Asian, Pacific Islander and Latinx communities at MOLAA’s 2022 Asian and Pacific Islander Latinx Heritage Festival! Presented as a series of engaging events during the month of May, this festival will explore the extensive histories of migration and colonization; the cross-cultural exchange that has taken place between Asian and Pacific Islander Latinx communities throughout California and beyond; and delve into issues of Asian and Pacific Islander representation in the media and pop culture.

A special episode of Superhero Stuff You Should Know, presented by Ben Wan and Andrew Bush. Superhero Stuff Podcast is a superhero comic and movie deep dive podcast. This special episode focuses on the 1970’s Batman films from the Philippines.

"West Side Story" Film Screening and Q&A with David Alvarez

Join us for an evening of fun, film, and music with “West Side Story: David Alvarez and the making of a cross-cultural musical.” This event begins at 5PM with an unveiling and short presentation on select costumes from the 2021 film, directed by Steven Spielberg. At 6PM, MOLAA’s Education department will host a Q&A with actor David Alvarez (“Bernardo”). An indoor screening of the film will start at 6:30PM and has a run time of 2 hours and 36 minutes.
