Join us for "Keepers of the Corn," a documentary by Gustavo Vazquez and produced by Jonathan Barbieri & Yira Vallejo, explores the ancient seed exchange practices among native farmers in Oaxaca, Mexico. These exchanges, dating back millennia, preserve traditional milpa farming knowledge. Ejido Unión Zapata hosts one such exchange, with 500 indigenous farmers participating. No money changes hands; instead, genetic diversity and knowledge are the currency. The film delves into the significance of preserving over sixty native corn varieties in Mexico and the challenges posed by modern influences like fast food and herbicides. It highlights the collaborative efforts of farmers, scientists, activists, and chefs in safeguarding this cultural treasure.
